What are Iterative Processes?
Iterations are the many steps programmers have taken to get to a current release. A current release (as opposed to a final release) may be short on functionality - either a minimal system that goes into production early, or one that's not yet ready for public release at all.
Each iteration introduces a new element of functionality, which is fully tested and integrated before the next iteration begins.
This incremental method of testing and development is better able to expose bugs - which might otherwise be hidden in untested code - as well as misunderstood requirements. At the end of each iteration, customers get to check and give feedback on the progress made. Customers can even change the direction of development.
Agile processes rely on and encourage effective and regular communication. Iterations normally last a few weeks, and are kept as short as possible to enable frequent feedback. This collaboration between programmers and customers creates a much closer working relationship, and the basis of a true business partnership.
